IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) provides a reliable, timely, accurate, and updated source of information for use by public health practitioners. The information provides knowledge on current disease outbreaks, and the recommended steps for safety and prevention against a particular disease (CDC, 2020). Although the information and recommendations may not necessarily eliminate occurrence of the disease, the knowledge there in gives public health practitioners a guided protocol to help counter the disease and safe lives. The MMWR provides information on a new outbreak of a disease, its mode of transmission, recommended interventions, and updates on new information about the disease. Information such as number of cases reported, data on the number of cases reported, the location, and precautions put in place can be found on a weekly basis.

The MMWR was on Legionnaire’s disease which was reported in January 2018 by the Wisconsin Department of Health. It was about a patient who died of the disease 10days after being admitted at a Wisconsin Hospital in that same month.Legionnaires disease is a form of atypical pneumonia caused by any type of Legionella bacteria. Signs and symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, high fever, muscle pains, and headaches. … It is usually spread by breathing in mist or drinking contaminated water that contains the bacteria(CDC, 2018). Per the report the patient was admitted for a fever and rash which was suspected to be from an oral antibiotic he was taking at home. The patient had been prescribed levofloxacin for 30days for an ongoing infection. However, when he was almost done with taking his antibiotics, he developed the fever and rash, with some changes in mental status. After the admission, the patient’s symptoms rather worsened, especially his mental status. He eventually ended up in septic shock, which was attributed to hospital acquired pneumonia. Upon investigation after his death, it turned out that the patient cause of death was from Legionnaire’s disease, thus he tested positive for Legionella pneumophila. Epidemiologist found that the mode of transmission was from aspiration of contaminated drinking water source. This was an analytical epidemiology because the researchers investigated the why and how by comparing the source of drinking water from the hospital and that of the patient’s home and found that the drinking water from the hospital was negative for the bacteria, however the water from the patient’s home was the source of infection.
