Select one of the questions below and respond and answer in 300 words your opinions. These are opinions that others may find disagreement. That is OK. However, it gives us an opportunity to explore how the constitution and the Bill of Rights is open to interpretation.

As stated in the syllabus, “students have the right to disagree and debate points of view on subjects and topic covered. While criticism of ideas are welcome, criticism of others is not acceptable. This means that no racist, ableist, transphobic, xenophobic, chauvinistic or otherwise derogatory comments will be allowed.” Please take these words into consideration when you respond to three of your fellow classmates with your thoughts on their opinion.

Please select one of the following:

  • Option 1- The First Amendment guarantees us freedom of speech, so people can say what they want, even if it hurts another person. Where does freedom of speech end and bullying begin?
  • Option 2- Religious orientation or practice, also guaranteed by the First Amendment, became an issue after September 11, 2001. Why do you think that happened? Do you think there’s a way to address freedom of religion in relation to extremism? How? Would it help make the United States of America safer?
  • Option 3- Some criminal trials can last months, depending on their complexity; do you believe they adhere to the right to a speedy trial, as guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment? Why or why not?
