What do you want readers to do or think?

Hello,

I have attached the directions, rubric, sample and a sheet of websites/prezi that tell you exactly how the paper should be, that were in the lecture of the professor. Please read all the directions carefully before starting this paper. If you have any question, ask them, I will respond in a timely manner.

My topic has been Education – Diversity in the Classroom from Cultures to Disabilities and How the Teacher must try and meet the needs of the Student. All of the resources listed below are related to the topic of discussion.

For the Researched Argument, you are going to construct an audience-based argument that presents a claim about your topic and integrates the research you have done this semester to support your claim.

Think carefully about your readers. Consider these five questions:

  1. What do you want readers to do or think?
  2. Why should they do or think that?
  3. How do they know that what you say is true?
  4. What should readers know about counterarguments?
  5. What larger principles or context grounds your argument?

Also, think about the stakeholders involved in your topic. Who is most impacted? Most invested? Who can be the agents of change? Who is in the most powerful position to effect change? Note: stakeholders and agents of change are not always the same group of people.

Writing an audience-based argument means thinking about your goals. What do you want the audience to do, think, or feel? What action do you think they need to take (if applicable)? In some cases, your audience may be large entities, such as corporations or governments, so you should set proportionate goals for your audience.

Whatever your goal for your audience, you must choose and evaluate evidence accordingly. What evidence does the audience need? To what would they respond best? What most aligns with their own goals and agendas? Here, a careful consideration of ethos, pathos, and logos is critical. How are you going to appeal to your reader in a way that persuades them to proceed according to your recommendations?

In other words, your thesis, evidence, purpose, and writing style should all correspond to your intended audience. You do not need to identify the audience explicitly, but you do need to write as if you were addressing that intended audience.

What should it include?

1) a general but attention grabbing introduction that speaks to the specific sentiments or concerns of the audience you have chosen whilst also indicating your position

2) a specific claim that clearly states what you think the audience should think, feel, or do differently (Ex. It is imperative that the FDA conduct independent research on the effects of GMOs on human beings.)

3) body paragraphs that identify supporting reasons, ideas, or examples for the claim

4) well-developed details and explanations for supporting ideas, all relating back to supporting the claim

5) a conclusion that emphasizes the importance of taking the action or making the change recommended by the claim

6) coherent organization between and within paragraphs

7) appropriate style and tone suited to the purpose and audience of the argument

8) clear and logical argumentative strategies tailored to the audience

9) proper, ethical, and correct documentation for ALL sources (sources that have been carefully evaluated, of course)

10) correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization throughout

How is it formatted?

Please format your paper in MLA Style:

  • Minimum of 5 sources, including one primary source and one visual source.
  • 1,200 – 1,500 words
  • MLA formatting

What is the motive for murder in “The Cask of Amontillado”?

Writing Assignment Number 3 with Research

ENC 1102

Length: Roughly 1200 to 1400 words. (5/6 pages)

Please follow MLA format. This is of utmost importance. Follow each and every rule listed. This is not optional. Read everything in this assignment and be sure you have followed the directions and tips listed before you submit your paper.

Due Dates: Do NOT blow these due dates! You have been given plenty of time.

Annotated Bibliography:

And the research paper

Your research paper will be five or six pages (1200 to 1400 words) written about one of the options below. Your research paper will require you to use Modern Language Association (MLA) documentation format to incorporate research and source materials (criticism, analysis, quotes form the text) into your writing to support your ideas.

You will use parenthetical references throughout the paper to indicate citations which will be listed on a works cited page. Failure to include both in-text citations AND a corresponding Works Cited page will result in a zero for the assignment and force your failure for the course.

· You must use at least five sources which offer commentary on your topic, plus quotes from the text. You will have a minimum of six sources listed in your Works Cited page, as the text itself will also be included.

· All of your sources must come from serious, reputable, academic sources; the best way to ensure this is to utilize sources that you find in the databases on the Valencia library website and the literary criticism books in the library itself. (See Library Research Handout) You do NOT want to cite general online sources like Wikipedia, Book Rags, Enotes, Gradesaver, Suite 101, blogs and the like.

· Your paper must show appropriate integration of quotes (see quote integration handouts).

Please choose one of the following on which to base your paper:

As usual, if you have an idea other than the prompts that interests you, please email your thoughts to me so I can approve them. Your idea must be related to the stories we have read for Weeks 7, 8 or 9.

Please choose one of the following on which to base your paper:

1. What is the motive for murder in “The Cask of Amontillado”? Be specific. Do not say it was the “insult.” Tell me what the “insult” is specifically. Did Fortunato steal from Montresor? Did he cut him in the lunch line? What did he do? Remember, whatever Fortunato did do happened before the story begins. Play a little game of CSI.

General Guidelines for MLA format:

· Double-space the text of your paper, and use a legible font (e.g. Times New Roman). Whatever font you choose, MLA recommends that the regular and italics type styles contrast enough that they are recognizable one from another. The font size should be 12 pt.

· Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation marks.

· Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides.

· Indent the first line of paragraphs one half-inch from the left margin. MLA recommends that you use the Tab key as opposed to pushing the Space Bar five times.

· Create a header that numbers all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.

· Use italics throughout your essay for the titles of longer works and, only when absolutely necessary, providing emphasis.

Formatting the First Page of Your Paper:

· Do not make a title page for your paper.

· In the upper left-hand corner of the first page, list your name, your instructor’s name, the course, and the date. Again, be sure to use double-spaced text.

· Double space again and center the title. Do not bold, underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks; write the title in Title Case (standard capitalization), not in all capital letters.

· Use quotation marks and/or italics when referring to other works in your title, just as you would in your text: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as Morality Play; Human Weariness in “After Apple Picking”

· Double space between the title and the first line of the text.

· Create a header in the upper right-hand corner that includes your last name, followed by a space with a page number; number all pages consecutively with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin. (Note: Your instructor or other readers may ask that you omit last name/page number header on your first page. Always follow instructor guidelines.)

Tips:

· Do not use contractions (don’t, can’t, shouldn’t)

· Stay away from the pronoun I as much as possible. Discuss the characters, not yourself, your feelings or your thoughts. Your thoughts and feelings should shine through in your discussion of the topic.

· Do not make me part of your discussion by using the pronoun you. Avoid sentences like “You can see how much Sammy wants out.” Do not assume anything about the reader. Use the words the reader.

· Do not make unsubstantiated assumptions about anything. Do not start your paper out by saying something like “Life in 1960s was boring.”

· Everything you write in your paper should in some way be substantiating your thesis. Everything.

Writing to Persuade:  Annotated Bibliography Assignment (Upload Only)

In order to complete your Research Paper, you will need to do research. One of the more useful tools in conducting research is the annotated bibliography.  An annotated bibliography combines the citations found in the Works Cited at the end of documents in MLA format with annotations about each of the sources. For this assignment, you will construct an annotated bibliography based upon the story that you have chosen to research.

Length: 4 or 5 pages

Purpose:  An annotated bibliography is an organizing tool that is helpful when working on a research project.  An effective annotated bibliography is used to compile research sources in one location and provide the researcher with quick access to the information contained in each source.

Content/Subject: Your annotated bibliography will consist of the sources that you have deemed relevant to your thesis. While you may encounter sources that are not relevant or do not fit the scope of your project while researching, for the purposes of this assignment, you will only include the ones that you find useful and relevant.

1. Cite the source in proper MLA format.  The citations should be organized in alphabetical order by author just as in an MLA Works Cited page.

2. Follow with a brief annotation that summarizes the source (approx. 8-10 sentences). You may include very small quotes from the source, but do not copy and paste the abstract. Ideally, all of the annotation should be in your own words.

3. In 1 or 2 sentences, explain the source’s relevance and importance to proving your thesis.

Constraints:  The annotated bibliography is a fairly rigid genre.  Your citations must adhere to MLA format.  This will be one of the central components of the grade for this assignment.  Failure to follow MLA format exactly will harm your grade.

The annotations for each source should follow an academic style.  This means that you must construct, with elevated and sophisticated language, correct grammatical sentences that effectively summarize what each source has to say.  Additionally, you should explain how each source is relevant to the thesis that you have selected.

Specific guidelines to follow when completing this assignment are:

· 5 academic sources

· Sources focused around a narrowed issue or question of inquiry

· Adherence to MLA format for all citations

· Sources in alphabetical order according to author

· Thoughtful and complete annotations of 150 to 200 words for each entry

· Correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Why do women earn less than men?

PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AS THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO YOU!!!  I HAVE ALSO INCLUDED ALL THE INFORMATION THAT YOU NEED!!!!!

As you read Chapter 12, think about what it means to be a male or female in today’s society.  In addition pay close attention to this week’s .ppt.  The .ppt is a series of charts and graphs illustrating trends in higher education and the workforce according to gender.  Two trends to notice are:

  1. Women, on average, earn about 75 cents for every dollar a man earns.
  2. More women are enrolled in college/university than men.

If earning potential is tied to educational attainment, then why do women earn less money than men?  More women are enrolled in college than men, should equate to more women with college degrees than men with college degrees, right?

Why do women earn less than men?

Share your response in at least two paragraphs by Wednesday.

What is your opinion toward cohabitation?

PLEASE FOLLOW ALL THE INSTRUCTION AS THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO YOU!!!!!

What is your opinion toward cohabitation?  Do you feel it is appropriate for couples to live together before marriage?  You know, “test drive” first?  Do you feel cohabitation will lead to a stronger, happier marriage?  Why or Why not?

Share your response in at least two paragraphs by Friday.

what qualities make the most frightening biological/scientific monster(s)

you’ll be researching what qualities make the most frightening biological/scientific monster(s) and presenting that research via an APA-formatted annotated bibliography.

ou will need at least TWO web sources, at least TWO Academic Database sources, at least ONE print text source, AND ONE source from the Monsters text.  Thus, you’ll have at least six sources.

You’ll also attach a synthesis/argument page to each annotated bibliography—the directions are below. As always, see me if you’re stumped.  When you proofread, note that likely errors will involve:

  • vague pronoun use (it’s easy to craft sentences with a vague “they” referring to the maker of the film),
  • Passive voice (avoiding “they” can lead to really vague “scenes were added” types of statements),
  • Indefinite “you” (check for it and lose it—it will never be correct in an essay like this),
  • MLA v. APA.

for a cover page- answer the following questions in a paragraph each:

APA (most frightening biological/”real” monster)

  1. Why did you choose this particular creature? Is this a monster that terrifies most people, or is there something about it that you are particularly sensitive to?
  2. Globally speaking, how dangerous is this monster to humanity?
  3. Which part of the writing of this APA-based assignment was the worst for you, and how this experience has helped you understand the difference between research in the sciences and research in the humanities.

Discuss the irony in “Civil Peace—both in the story’s title and in Jonathan Iwegbu’s reaction to being robbed.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AS THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO YOU NO OUTSIDE SOURCES I WILL PROVIDE THE INFORMATION!!!

Choose ONE of the following questions and answer it.

1. Discuss the irony in “Civil Peace—both in the story’s title and in Jonathan Iwegbu’s reaction to being robbed.

2. Discuss how Chinua Achebe combines the native language of Nigeria with the English language to make realistic conversations in “Civil Peace.”

Each response needs only to be THREE WELL-DEVELOPED PARAGRAPHS, (about 250-500 words) but if you feel the need to take a topic and run with it, then feel free to do so.

I will grade your responses based on the following criteria:

1. I will look at the thoughtfulness of the answer. Your posting should have a thesis and some development to prove that thesis. If you simply answer the question without adding anything valuable to the discussion, then you’ll get a minimal grade. If you raise interesting questions or interpretations to the reading, then your grade will be higher.

a. NOTE: It is better to only have one or two major points for a thesis and then develop that point fully than it is to have three or four points without developing any of those points at all.

2. The second criterion that I will be grading your response on is surface errors. This is, after all, an English class. Just because this is only a short reader response does not mean that you can have a lot of spelling errors, run-on sentences, sentence fragments agreement errors, missing punctuation, or second person pronouns (you, your, you’re) in your response. Since you had to pass both English 1101 and 1102 to take this class, I will expect you to write your paper with a mastery of collegiate-level grammar.

3. I REQUIRE you to use a minimum of one direct quote (more if necessary) to help solidify your evidence. When you use direct quotes, be sure to-

a. Format the quote properly in MLA FORMAT. If it’s three lines or fewer, use short quote format, complete with setting the quote off with a comma and enclosing it in quotation marks. If the quote runs into a fourth line, then it should be a block quote.

b. CITE the page numbers (for prose) or line numbers (for poetry) for every single quote. Improperly citing a source, or not citing the source at all, will cause the writer to lose points.

I have included two handouts in the MLA folder of our class page.
